Priory of Simon Peter

Name and History

The Priory of Simon Peter is located in Ottawa, ON. We are the Third Priory to be recognized in Canada, with the Priory of Simon Peter being recognized in 2009.

Our history began in 2009 when Theodore Griffiths recruited 20 members who were then invested into the Order resulting in the creation of the Priory of Simon Peter.

Community Engagement and Charitable Giving

Our major community partnership is with Cornerstone Housing for Women, a charitable organization that aims to break the cycles of homelessness, poverty and abuse. Cornerstone runs four housing communities where more than 60 women of every race, age and creed are welcomed every day.

Cornerstone saw that women at risk of homelessness had nowhere to turn. The organization responded to the need to be there for them, to build a safe place for women in desperate need. This need has only increased over the years, as women continue to be at risk of homelessness.

The Priory of Simon Peter contributes to the support of Cornerstone’s aim by visiting a local Costco Warehouse once a week, to receive a donation of food stuffs that are nearing their expiry date. We then pass this food on to two Cornerstone sites.

Our Priory also participates in Cornerstone’s ‘meal-a-month’ program by shopping, preparing and serving a meal every month in which there is a fifth Saturday.

In line with food donations, there are some weeks where the food that is donated far exceeds the space to store it within the Cornerstone community. The overflow food is then donated to a shelter for homeless veterans.

Our flagship project “Hockey Knights in Canada” is one where gently used youth hockey equipment is donated to the Priory. A few times a year all of the donated equipment is sorted, inventoried and re-packaged. At least twice a year, we ship this equipment to the youth in Northern Canada who do not have the wherewithal to equip themselves.

The Priory of Simon Peter also supports the Aphasia Center of Ottawa, (ACO) by raising funds through sponsoring social events where the proceeds are donated to ACO.

Another way in which the Priory assists those who are less fortunate is through the International KIVA organization. KIVA is a lending platform connecting online lenders to entrepreneurs across the globe. The Priory helps support women in third world countries. 100% of our annual $1000 donation goes into micro-loans where the repayment rate is 98%.

Gatherings

Our major event annually is the Convent, Investiture and Banquet, traditionally held in May. The Convent a ceremonial event where we welcome and invest new Knights and Dames, announce promotions, and renew our dedication to the Order, followed by a formal banquet of celebration.

Socially, we have two gatherings each year, at a variety of venues, where we celebrate Christmas and summer.
